So…How Does Feldenkrais Actually Work?

Yesterday, I gave my first Functional Integration session to a dear friend who had never experienced the Feldenkrais Method before.

Within just a few minutes—and after only a handful of tiny movements—she was astonished by how clearly she could feel things changing. More than once, while her eyes were closed, she asked what kind of voodoo or magic I was doing.

Let me tell you: as a newly minted Feldenkrais practitioner, having someone react that way is an absolute dream!

After the session, she wasn’t only excited—she was intensely curious  More specifically, she wanted to know: HOW?!

So, Sarah, this post is for you.

“How does this work?” is a question almost anyone who has experienced the magic of Feldenkrais eventually asks. Over three years of training, I’ve been trying to piece together my own answer. Of course, this is not the definitive Feldenkrais explanation. It’s simply the way I currently understand the work—and the way I would explain it to a friend.

So where does the magic come from? In my experience, it's largely a result of 3 key elements:

1. We work directly with your nervous system—not your muscles

Unlike many conventional approaches to movement, Feldenkrais is not primarily focused on strengthening or stretching individual muscles. We are interested in something deeper: how your nervous system has learned to organize your movement. 

Most of the time, you don’t consciously decide how to walk, reach, turn, or sit. You learned those movements gradually, your brain developed familiar patterns for carrying them out, and now those patterns run mostly in the background.

That is incredibly useful. It would be wildly inefficient to reinvent walking every time you stood up.

But sometimes the patterns we rely on begin to wear on us.

Maybe you habitually shift most of your weight onto your right side. Perhaps you hold one shoulder slightly higher or barely involve your ribs when you turn. Over time, the parts doing more than their share can become compressed, tense, achy, or just tired.

Strengthening and stretching can absolutely be valuable. But if the underlying movement pattern stays the same, you may continue recreating the very tension you’re trying to relieve.

Feldenkrais approaches the problem differently.

As a practitioner, I wouldn't verbally instruct you to “use your ribs when you reach.” Instead, I create a sensory and movement experience that helps you discover notice, Oh! My ribs can participate in this.

That distinction between verbal instructions and sensory experience matters.Rather than giving you another instruction to remember, we give your nervous system a chance to sense a new possibility directly. You feel the difference for yourself. You explore it without pressure. And through that experience, your brain begins to update its understanding of what is possible. It's like an update to your operating system. 

Does one experience permanently erase every old habit? Probably not. But it opens a doorway. It gives your system another option—and each time you revisit that option, it can become clearer, more available, and more familiar.

2. Tiny movements make tiny differences easier to feel

Imagine listening to music at 90 decibels. If someone turns the volume up to 92, you might not notice the difference.

But if the music is barely audible and someone raises it by the same amount, the change will be obvious.

Movement works in a similar way. When you make a large, forceful movement, there is a lot of sensory “noise.” It can be difficult to notice the subtle ways in which you brace, hesitate, shift your weight, or stop breathing.

When the movement becomes smaller and slower, those differences become much clearer. You may begin to notice, When I turn to the right, everything flows—but when I turn to the left, something feels blocked." Those may sound like tiny discoveries, but tiny differences can have a huge impact on how movement feels.Anyone who has spent a full day in high heels already knows that a few inches can change the experience of your entire body!

3. We cultivate comfort and safety to create the conditions for learning

Feldenkrais practitioners talk about comfort constantly—and not just because we are very nice people!

Comfort is essential because your nervous system can't absorb new information when it is busy protecting you from discomfort. For example, suppose I position you on your side but don’t place enough support under your head. If your neck hurts the whole time, you are not going to notice much about how your pelvis moves or how your ribs expand.

You’re going to be lying there thinking, My neck hurts.That discomfort creates too much noise for anything quieter to get through.

This is why, in Feldenkrais, we pay so much attention to the details: is your head well supported, is the pressure of my hands clear and comfortable, is my grip steady without being tight, am I pacing my touch and movement to provide just enough input. 

When those elements are right, your system can settle. Your breathing changes. Your muscles stop working so hard. And then, voila! You can suddenly sense subtle differences and absorb new information—often without consciously realizing how much your body is learning.

A funny side note: it is extremely common for someone’s stomach to start growling during a session, since your body is shifting toward its “rest and digest” state. I’ve started taking those mysterious stomach noises as a sign that we’re probably doing something right.

I'm sure there's much more that could be said about how Feldenkrais works, but these are the pieces that feel most important to me:

We explore the patterns beneath the movement.
We make things small enough for differences to become noticeable.
And we create enough comfort and safety for the nervous system to become curious rather than defensive.

I want my students to understand this because knowing a little about how the process works changes how you participate in it.

You stop trying so hard to perform the movement correctly.

You begin listening for differences.

You become curious about what you are already doing—and what else might be possible.

And that curiosity is where the real magic begins.
